A poor relation to the likes of Portmarnock just across the estuary but still pleasant and a lot cheaper. Not all holes are "links" style but a few of them are top class. Fairly short and tight in spots, with the first couple of holes sharing a fairway. Sutton is famous as the home course of the legendary Joe Carr. He may have sharpened his short game skills here but he will have gone elsewhere to practice his long game.

Accuracy essential as the many big trees will punish errant shots. Some good holes but spoiled by having too many par 3's (including the two opening holes) This is a shame and strange as they have some fine extra holes that could easily be incorporated to improve it from being a short and overly tight par 68.

Layout changes a few years ago have improved the course. Its a good mix of long and short holes, with a few dog-legs for good measure. Usually in good condition. Another feature is the availability of visitor tee times on Saturdays. It isn't the most spectacular or memorable experience but most will enjoy it a lot.

Unfortunately, that's about the only good thing that can be said about it. Holes on the sides of hills, holes crossing each other, a confusing and tight layout and tricked up greens. If you want to enjoy a walk on Howth Head, you will enjoy it more without trying to play golf at the same time. Sorry, but its a mess.

However the price you pay for this is a tight layout, a lot of short holes and a rather "urban" environment. It is also not a very friendly place; members tend to be old, wealthy and a bit snobbish and the staff take a similar approach. I don't think they want visitors very much.

If you are pressed for time and have restricted travel options, it might suit but there are many many more attractive, better value and more pleasant courses in and around Dublin.

Hosting an open event while these conditions applied was a bit sharp.

That apart, it is a pleasant and convenient course and would be worth trying when in better shape. It is not overly long and has some interesting holes.

It is fairly busy so it is advised to turn up with time to spare as rushing straight to the first is not recommended when you are a high handicapper such as myself. The first is a sneaky hole, nice and straightforward, short with a big green, and belies the horrors in store! Corballis is not a long course but boy do you want to be able to hit straight, the fairways are tight and the rough, i.e. marram grass on the dunes, is murderous. Some of the holes slightly more away from the sea allow you to let rip a little, but smart play and straight hitting is the order of the day. When you add in the breeze, which was gale force the last time I played, you have a tough test of golf. My favourite hole is a par 3 where the tee box in on top of what feels like a gigantic dune and the green looks like a postage stamp. My 5 wood sailed out into the gale and miraculously ended up around 15 feet from the hole. I three putted. Legend has it that Bernhard Langer used to practice there, I dont know what challenge the course presented to Herr Langer but for me, it was a teeth gritted experience at times. That being said, I think it says more about my game than the course, but be warned, this is a stern test for most golfers.

Pros - good condition, good value. Good challenge.
Cons - take a dustbin bag full of balls with you if the wind blows.
